What is a Catholic prayer card (holy card)?
A Catholic prayer card, also called a holy card, is a small printed card carrying a prayer, an image of Christ, Mary, or a saint, and often the name of a departed loved one. They are given out at funerals, sacraments, and parish events, and kept in Bibles, missals, and pockets as reminders to pray.
What is the difference between the Gloria and the Glory Be?
They are two distinct prayers that share similar opening words of praise. The Glory Be is a short doxology recited often throughout daily prayer and at the end of each Rosary decade. The Gloria, or Gloria in Excelsis Deo, is a longer hymn of praise sung or recited near the start of Mass on Sundays and feast days outside Advent and Lent. Which Catholic prayer card should I give at a funeral?
The Eternal Rest prayer is the traditional funeral holy card and appears on the vast majority of Catholic memorial cards. It is often paired with a name, birth and death dates, and a photograph. For a broader Christian funeral, our funeral & memorial prayer-card set may fit better.
Is there a different or longer version of the St. Michael prayer than the one on the card?
Yes, longer and alternative forms exist. The card on this page carries the short traditional Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, which Pope Leo XIII composed in 1886. Catholics recited that form after Low Mass for decades. A separate, much longer exorcism prayer is also associated with Pope Leo XIII, but that rite is meant for priests and is not printed on these cards. Our St. Michael prayer page provides the Latin text, a one-line form, and a novena. We cannot verify prayer texts attributed to a particular individual priest, such as Padre Candido. Ask your parish priest or check the source of the card you saw.
Can I add an image of a saint or a photo of a loved one?
