Solomon's Prayer for Wisdom

Solomon's prayer for wisdom is in 1 Kings 3:5-14, and 2 Chronicles 1 gives a parallel account. At Gibeon God told him to ask for whatever he wanted, and Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge God's people and to discern between good and bad. The scene opens with a dream.

The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night in Gibeon, and God said, 'Ask what I shall give thee' (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon's answer starts with where he stands. God had made him king instead of his father David, and Solomon calls himself 'a little child' who does not know how to go out or come in (1 Kings 3:7).

He asks God for an understanding heart to judge the people, so that he can discern between good and bad. He also asks who is able to judge a people so great (1 Kings 3:9). In 1 Kings 3:11, God comments on the request.

God says Solomon asked for understanding to discern judgment, and did not ask for long life, riches, or the lives of his enemies. God answers in 1 Kings 3:12 and 3:13. He gives Solomon a wise and an understanding heart, so that none before or after would be like him, and adds the riches and honour Solomon did not ask for.

A Short Prayer for an Understanding Heart

Lord, give me an understanding heart today. Show me what is good and what is not, and give me the courage to act on what I see. I cannot judge everything in front of me on my own, so I ask You to supply what I lack. Amen.

A Longer Prayer for Someone Given More Than They Can Carry

Father, You have placed a responsibility on me that feels larger than I am. Like Solomon, I can say that I do not know how to go out or come in, and the weight of other people's lives sits heavily on my shoulders. I ask for an understanding heart, and nothing more. Give me patience when I am worn thin, clarity when the choices are unclear, and the humility to say that I do not know. Keep me from pretending to have answers I do not have. Let the people who depend on me see Your faithfulness in how I treat them. When I am tempted to trust only my own judgment, turn my eyes back to You. Remind me that James says You give wisdom generously to anyone who asks. If this weight becomes more than I can carry, help me reach out to a pastor, a counselor, or a doctor, and do not let me carry it alone. I come to You as a servant who needs help, and I trust You to hear me. Amen.

A Prayer for Wisdom to Lead or Parent

Lord, people look to me for direction, and I need Your wisdom to lead them well. Give me the patience to correct without crushing and the discipline to listen before I speak. Show me when to be firm and when to be gentle. Let my decisions be fair, and let my words be steady. Help me ask You for wisdom before I ask anyone else for an opinion. Amen.

A Prayer to Tell Good from Bad

Father, give me discernment to tell good from bad, especially when the difference is hard to see. Guard my mind from what is false, and guard my heart from what looks right but leads me away from You. Help me slow down before I decide, and give me clear thinking when I am under pressure. Amen.

A Prayer for Wisdom Before a Decision

Lord, I ask You for wisdom before I decide. You know the options in front of me and the people each choice will touch. Give me an understanding heart, slow my reaction, and quiet my fears so I can hear Your direction. Help me to act on what I know and to wait when I do not. Amen.

A One-Line Prayer for Wisdom

Lord, give me an understanding heart, and let me judge with wisdom. Amen.

A Prayer for Thanks Beyond What I Asked

Father, thank You that You hear people who feel too small for what is in front of them. Solomon asked for an understanding heart, and You also gave him riches and honour he had not asked for. Teach me to ask for the right thing first. Give me a heart that can tell good from bad, and keep me humble if I am given more than I expected. Help me treat whatever You entrust to me as Yours. Where I receive more than I asked, keep me generous. Where I receive less than I hoped, keep me faithful. Amen.

A Prayer When I Do Not Know How to Go Out or Come In

Lord, I feel the way Solomon did when he called himself a little child who did not know how to go out or come in. I do not know what to do first, and I do not know who to ask. I bring You the exact thing I am facing today. Give me an understanding heart for it, and show me one step I can take. Help me ask for help from the people You have put near me. Keep me from pretending that I have this under control. When I am afraid, remind me that You told Solomon to ask, and that I am allowed to ask You too. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Solomon's prayer for wisdom in the Bible?

Solomon's prayer for wisdom is in 1 Kings 3:5-14. A parallel account is in 2 Chronicles 1. The setting is Gibeon, where the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night and told him to ask for what God would give him.

What did Solomon ask God for?

Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge God's people and to discern between good and bad (1 Kings 3:9). He called himself a little child who does not know how to go out or come in (1 Kings 3:7). He also asked who is able to judge a people so great.

What did God say back to Solomon?

God told Solomon that He had given him a wise and an understanding heart, so that no one before him was like him and none after him would be like him (1 Kings 3:12). God also said He had given him riches and honour that he had not asked for, and that no king would be like him all his days (1 Kings 3:13). In 1 Kings 3:11, God named what Solomon had not asked for: long life, riches, and the life of his enemies.

Why did God add riches and honour?

1 Kings 3:13 says God gave riches and honour that Solomon had not asked for. The verse states the result as well: no king would be like him all his days. God added them to the wisdom Solomon asked for, and the account records them as given without being requested.

Can I pray the way Solomon did?

Scripture invites believers to ask God for wisdom in prayer, so asking the way Solomon did fits that invitation. Solomon came to God admitting his need, calling himself a little child and asking for a gift to judge a people so great. Praying as Solomon did does not guarantee any particular outcome, so bring the request to God and trust Him with the result. If the weight you are carrying feels heavier than you can bear, talk with a pastor, counselor, or doctor as well as with God.

What verse should I pray if I need wisdom today?

James 1:5 is a verse to pray when you need wisdom today. It says that anyone who lacks wisdom can ask God, who gives to all generously. The verse says the wisdom shall be given, so pray the verse back to God and name the specific decision in front of you. Start with the short prayer above if you want words to begin.

What parts of Solomon's request can I copy in my own prayers?

Solomon named himself first, as a servant who did not know how to go out or come in. He then named the gift he needed, an understanding heart, and the purpose of it, judging the people and telling good from bad. Pick one prayer above and pray it before your next decision this week.
