Prayer for Wisdom
To pray for wisdom, tell God plainly what you need wisdom for, ask Him for it, and and ask Him for it. James 1:5 (KJV) promises that He gives to all people generously and does not reproach those who ask. Then keep walking. Proverbs 3:6 tells believers to acknowledge God in all their ways.
Scripture uses wisdom, understanding, and knowledge together, and the prayers ask for all three together. Proverbs 2:6 (KJV) says that the LORD gives wisdom, and that knowledge and understanding come out of his mouth. Colossians 1:9 (KJV) prays that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Ephesians 1:17 (KJV) asks God for the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.
Use the prayers below for a decision that is weighing on you, a choice between two good options, words for a hard conversation, or a season when waiting is the faithful step. Scripture invites believers to ask God for wisdom in prayer, and a prayer for wisdom does not guarantee that a particular decision turns out as hoped.
A Short Prayer for Wisdom
Lord, I need wisdom for what is in front of me today. Show me the next step and help me see clearly. You promised to give wisdom generously to anyone who asks, so I ask you now. Keep me from leaning only on my own understanding. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom in a Specific Decision
Father, you know the decision I am facing, and you know how much I want to get it right. I bring it to you plainly. I have been turning it over in my own mind, and I see that I have been leaning on my own understanding. Your Word says that if I lack wisdom, I may ask you, and you give it to all people generously without reproach. So I ask you now for wisdom for this choice. Clear my thinking when I list my options, and quiet the fear that makes every path look wrong. Show me what matters most here and what can wait. If I am tempted to rush, slow me down. If I am tempted to delay out of fear, give me the courage to act once you have shown me the way. I acknowledge you in this, as Proverbs asks me to acknowledge you in all my ways, and I trust you to direct my paths. I know that asking for wisdom does not guarantee the outcome I hope for, so I place the result in your hands as well. Whatever comes, keep me close to you and help me walk in faithfulness. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom and Understanding
Lord, Proverbs says that you give wisdom, and that knowledge and understanding come from your mouth. I want more than information. I want to understand how the pieces of my life fit together and what you are doing in them. Fill me with the knowledge of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, as the letter to the Colossians prays for its readers. Give me understanding that stays humble and turns toward you. Help me hear your voice above the noise. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment Between Good Options
Father, I have two good options in front of me, and I cannot tell which one you want me to take. Solomon asked you for an understanding heart so that he could discern between good and bad. I ask the same for myself. Open my eyes to what is wise in each path, and show me where my own preferences are speaking louder than you. Give me peace where I should move forward, and let me know when to hold back. Help me decide with a clear conscience. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom in Speaking
Lord, I have a hard conversation ahead, and I want my words to be wise. Whether it is with my children, a friend, or someone I lead, let me speak with understanding and patience. Keep me from speaking first in anger or fear. Give me the right words at the right time, and help me listen before I answer. If I am wrong, soften my heart enough to say so. Amen.
A One-Line Prayer for Wisdom
Lord, give me the wisdom I lack and direct my steps today. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom to Wait on God
Father, I want to act, but I sense that you may be asking me to wait. Give me patience to hold this matter open before you without forcing an answer. Quiet the urgency in me, and steady my thoughts when they run ahead of what I know. Help me trust you with the timing, as Proverbs asks me to trust you with all my heart. Keep me faithful in the ordinary things while I wait. If this waiting weighs more than I can carry, give me the courage to ask a pastor, a counselor, or a doctor to walk with me. Amen.
