Prayer for Our Nation

To pray for our nation and its leaders, follow 1 Timothy 2:1-3. Bring supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanks to God for all people, including kings and everyone in authority, and ask Him for a quiet and peaceable life. At Find A Prayer, we write prayers for specific moments, and these ones ask for wisdom for leaders, justice and peace in the land, and a clear conscience for the person praying.

They seek the good of the whole country and leave no room for turning prayer into a campaign for one side. The verse says "all that are in authority," with no exception for leaders you voted against. So pray for the people in office by role: the mayor, the governor, the legislator, the head of state.

Ask for wisdom in their choices, truth in their words, and protection for their families. Proverbs 21:1 says the king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, and that gives you reason to pray for leaders with hope. The United States midterm elections are held on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, and the weeks before any vote are a good time to pray.

Pray for voters to choose with a clear conscience and for candidates to speak truthfully. Pray for poll workers to serve safely, and for the result to be received in peace. Keep that prayer humble by asking God to guide the country and leaving the outcome with Him.

Pray for your neighbors as well as your rulers. Jeremiah 29:7 told God's people to seek the peace of the city where they lived and to pray to the LORD for it, because in its peace they would find their own. A prayer for healing between divided neighbors belongs right beside a prayer for the people who govern them.

A Short Prayer for Our Nation

Lord, we lift our nation to You today. Give our leaders wisdom, give our people peace, and teach us to love our neighbors well. Turn our hearts toward You, and let justice and mercy grow in our land. Amen.

A Prayer for National Leaders and Those in Authority

Father, You told us to pray for all who are in authority, so we bring our leaders before You now. We pray for the ones we chose and the ones we did not. Give them wisdom when the choices are hard and courage when the right path costs them something. Guard their words from deceit and their hearts from pride. Protect their health and their families, and give them rest when the work is heavy. Where they govern well, help us to give You thanks. Where they fall short, correct them with patience and draw them toward what is good. Help us to speak about them with respect, even when we disagree. Amen.

A Prayer Before an Election

Lord, an election is coming, and we ask You to be present in it. Give voters clear minds and a clear conscience as they choose. Help every candidate to speak truthfully and to treat opponents with respect. Protect the poll workers and volunteers who keep the doors open and count the votes. Guard our communities from fear, anger and violence. Whatever the result, help us to receive it in peace and to keep loving the neighbors who voted differently. We trust You with what we cannot control. Amen.

A Prayer for Peace and Unity in a Divided Country

God of peace, our country feels divided, and we confess that we have added to the division with careless words. Heal what is broken between neighbors, families and friends. Soften hard hearts, starting with ours. Teach us to listen before we answer and to see the person in front of us as someone You made and love. Where arguments have turned into contempt, bring humility. Where trust has worn thin, rebuild it slowly. Make us people who seek the peace of the place where we live and pray for it, as You told Your people long ago. Amen.

A Longer Prayer of Repentance, Thanksgiving and Trust for Our Nation

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our nation. We start with confession. We have trusted our own strength, spoken harshly of one another, and overlooked the poor, the lonely and the stranger. Forgive us, Lord, and begin with the ones praying. Thank You for the good gifts in our land: for families and friendships, for work to do, for places to worship, and for the freedom to bring these words to You. Thank You for every person who serves the public faithfully and quietly. We pray for our leaders at every level. Give them wisdom, and give them the humility to ask You for it. Let justice be done for the weak and the strong alike. Let truth be spoken in our halls of government and in our homes. Where we are divided, make us patient. Where we are afraid, remind us that You hold the hearts of rulers in Your hand. We do not ask You to favor us above other nations. We ask that our country would turn toward You and treat its people with mercy. We place our nation, its leaders and its future in Your care, and we trust You with it. Amen.

A Prayer for Local Officials, First Responders and Teachers

Lord, we pray for the people who serve close to home. Bless our mayors, council members, judges and school boards with wisdom for decisions that touch our streets and classrooms. Protect the police officers, firefighters, paramedics and dispatchers who run toward danger for our sake. Give our teachers patience, energy and joy as they shape young minds. When they are tired or overlooked, remind them that their service is seen by You. Help us to thank them in person and to make their work lighter where we can. Amen.

A One-Line Prayer for Our Country

Lord, give our leaders wisdom, our land peace, and our hearts love for our neighbors. Amen.

Scripture to pray

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;— 1 Timothy 2:1 (KJV)
And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.— Jeremiah 29:7 (KJV)
The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.— Proverbs 21:1 (KJV)
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.— James 1:5 (KJV)

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about praying for leaders?

1 Timothy 2:1-3 tells believers to make supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks for all people, and it names "kings, and for all that are in authority." The stated purpose is that we may lead "a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty," and verse 3 calls this prayer "good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour." Jeremiah 29:7 adds a second instruction: seek the peace of the city where you live and pray to the LORD for it.

Should I pray for a leader I disagree with?

Yes. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 asks for prayer for "all that are in authority," and it makes no exception for leaders you oppose. Praying for someone does not mean you approve of every decision they make. Ask God to give that leader wisdom, to turn their heart toward what is right, and to guard your own heart from contempt. Proverbs 21:1 says the king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, so you can pray for a leader you disagree with in hope.

Is it appropriate to pray about an election?

Yes, an election is a fitting thing to bring to God. Pray for voters to choose with a clear conscience, for candidates to speak truthfully, for the safety of poll workers and volunteers, and for the result to be received in peace. James 1:5 says God gives wisdom liberally to anyone who asks, so ask for wisdom before you vote. Keep the prayer humble, and avoid asking God to defeat the people your neighbors support. In the United States, the midterm elections fall on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, which gives you a clear date to pray toward.

How often should I pray for my country?

Scripture does not set a schedule, but 1 Timothy 2:1 opens its call to pray for those in authority with the words "first of all." That phrase is a good reason to place the country near the front of your regular prayers. A simple pattern is a one-line prayer for the nation each day and a fuller prayer once a week. Add extra time in hard seasons, such as the weeks before an election.

Is there a prayer for America specifically?

Yes: pray any prayer for our nation and say "America" or "the United States" wherever the words say "our country." Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD," and you can pray that verse as a request that any nation, including the United States, would turn to God. Pray by role for the president, Congress, governors, mayors and judges, and pray for the midterm elections on 3 November 2026. The verse describes a blessing for any nation whose God is the LORD, so let your prayer for America stay humble about other countries.

What if I am discouraged by politics?

Bring the discouragement to God and make it part of your prayer. Tell Him plainly what worries you, then pray Proverbs 21:1 back to Him: the king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water. Turn some of your attention to your own street and town, as Jeremiah 29:7 asks. You can also step away from the news for a few days and spend that time in prayer instead.

How do I keep my prayers for the nation non-partisan?

Pray for people and offices, and leave parties and candidates out of the words. Ask for things every citizen can want: wisdom, justice, truthfulness, safety and peace. Before you pray aloud in a group, read your prayer through once and remove anything that tells God, or the people listening, how to vote. 1 Timothy 2:1 asks for prayer "for all men," and a prayer that leaves half the room out of it falls short of that call.

What should I pray for my local leaders and first responders?

Pray for wisdom in the decisions that shape your streets, schools and public safety. Ask God to protect police officers, firefighters and paramedics, and to give teachers patience and joy in their classrooms. Jeremiah 29:7 told God's people to seek the peace of the city where they lived and to pray for it, so your town council belongs in your prayers as much as your national leaders do. When you can, thank these people by name and tell them you are praying for them.
