Prayers for a Friend or Loved One

Some of the most heartfelt prayers are the ones we pray for someone else—a friend going through a hard time, a family member who is struggling, or simply a person God has placed on your heart. These prayers for others give you words to intercede: to ask God's help, comfort, and protection over the people you care about. Pray them quietly on someone's behalf, or let them know you're lifting them up.

You may not be able to fix what they're facing, but you can carry them to the One who can. Use the words below for whoever comes to mind, and trust that your prayers for them are heard.

A Short Prayer for a Friend

Lord, I lift my friend to You. Meet them in what they're facing, give them strength and peace, and let them know they are not alone. Watch over them today. Amen.

A Prayer for Someone Who Is Struggling

Father, someone I love is having a hard time, and I can't carry it for them. So I bring them to You. Hold them close, lighten their burden, and surround them with people who care. Give them hope for tomorrow and rest for tonight. Amen.

A Prayer to Pray Over Anyone

God, I name before You the person on my heart right now. You know exactly what they need. Provide it. Protect them, comfort them, and draw them close to You. Amen.

A Long Prayer for Someone I Love

Father, I come to You today carrying someone in my heart who matters deeply to me. You know them by name, and You know every part of their life that I cannot see. I thank You that before I ever thought to pray, You were already at work in them. Where they are weary, would You be their rest. Where they are confused, would You bring clarity in Your gentle timing. I lift up the worries that keep them awake at night, and I ask that Your peace would settle over them like the quiet after a storm. Be near to them in the ordinary hours, not only the hard ones. Surround them with people who tell the truth in love and who show up when it is inconvenient. Soften the places where they have grown hard or afraid, and remind them that they are not walking alone. When good things come, help them to see Your hand in it; when sorrow comes, help them to feel You holding them through it. Grow their faith, even in seasons when I cannot see the growth. I release my grip on the outcome and trust You with what only You can do. Thank You for letting me bring them to You, knowing You love them even more than I do. Amen.

A Breath Prayer for a Friend

Lord, hold the one I love close to You today. Amen.

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.Philippians 1:3–4

Prayers for specific situations

Frequently asked questions

What is a good prayer for a friend?

Pray simply for them: 'Lord, meet my friend in what they're facing, give them strength and peace, and let them know they are not alone. Amen.' Naming the specific situation they're in makes the prayer personal and powerful.

How do I pray for someone who is struggling?

Bring them to God by name and ask for three things: comfort in the moment, a lighter burden, and people around them who care. A prayer like 'Father, hold them close and give them hope for tomorrow and rest for tonight' covers both their heart and their circumstances.
