Prayer for Nurses

Lord, before I clock in, I bring this shift to You. Steady my hands, sharpen my judgment, and soften my voice for every patient I will meet today. When it is busy, hold me. When it is heartbreaking, be near. Let me care for each person as if they were my own, and give me the strength I do not yet have for what this shift will ask. Amen.

Father, I am learning, and there is so much I do not know yet. Give me humility to ask when I am unsure, courage to try when I am nervous, and patience with myself when I make mistakes. Bless my instructors, the nurses on the unit who let me shadow, and the patients who trust me with their care. Grow me into the nurse You are calling me to be. Amen.

Faithful God, the halls are quiet but the work is not. Meet me at 3 a.m. when the eyes get heavy and the pager will not stop. Refresh me between rounds, guard my body against the exhaustion that dulls attention, and give me one gentle word for every anxious family member I will meet before dawn. Amen.

God our shield, guard the nurses who go to work today in body and in mind. Protect them from what they carry home in their bodies — the pathogens, the injuries, the sleep that will not come. Protect them from what they carry home in their hearts — the losses, the moral weight, the compassion fatigue. Give them true rest, and bring them safely to the next shift and safely to their families. Amen.

Merciful God, I am tired, and some of what I saw today will stay with me for a long time. Take what I cannot carry alone and lay it down for me. Bless the patients I could not fix. Bless the families whose grief I witnessed. Bless the coworkers who kept me standing. And bring me home tonight to sleep, and to Your peace. Amen.

Lord, months of studying come down to this test, and my mind is racing through everything I might forget. Steady me. Bring back what I've actually learned when I need it, and quiet the panic that makes a known answer suddenly feel unfamiliar. Whatever the result, thank You for the nurse I've already become in the process of preparing for this. Give me a clear head, a calm body, and the confidence that I am ready. Amen.

God, this week the world pauses to thank nurses, and I add my own thanks to that — for the ones who chose this work and stayed in it, shift after shift, through the parts no one applauds. Bless every nurse reading this: the veteran who trains the new hires, the one counting down to retirement, the one still deciding if they can keep doing this. Renew their strength this week, and let them feel seen not just in a card but in Your own recognition of what they carry. Amen.

Faithful God, we remember a nurse who spent their working life caring for others and now needs to be cared for themselves — carried by You into rest. Thank You for every patient they comforted, every family they steadied, every quiet act of mercy no chart will ever record. Comfort their family and their coworkers, who feel this loss both as grief and as an empty chair on the unit. Receive them into Your peace, the peace they so often gave to others facing their own last hours. Amen.
