Prayers Before Surgery

Waiting for surgery—your own or a loved one's—can fill the hours with fear. A prayer before surgery is a way to steady your heart and place the whole thing, the surgeon's hands and the outcome, into God's care. These prayers ask for skill for the medical team, calm for the patient, and peace for everyone waiting.

Pray one the night before, in the pre-op room, or in the waiting area. Prayer doesn't replace good medical care—it surrounds it. Whatever the outcome you're hoping for, you can face this moment knowing God is in the room with you.

A Short Prayer Before Surgery

Lord, I place this surgery in Your hands. Guide the doctors, keep me safe, and calm my fear. Whatever comes, I trust You to be with me. Amen.

A Prayer for a Successful Surgery

Father, be near as this surgery begins. Give the surgeons and nurses skill, focus, and steady hands. Protect the body, guard against complications, and bring a good recovery. Quiet every fear in this room, and let Your peace settle over all of us. We trust this moment to You. Amen.

A Prayer for a Loved One in Surgery

God, my heart is in that operating room. Watch over the one I love. Guide every hand that cares for them, hold them safely through it, and give me the strength to wait in peace rather than fear. Bring them back to us. Amen.

A Longer Prayer for Peace Before Surgery

Lord Jesus, the day I have been waiting for has arrived, and my heart is unsettled as I prepare for surgery. You know the nervousness I feel as the hours count down, and the questions that keep circling in my mind. I bring all of it to You now and ask for a peace that settles deeper than my fear. Be with me as I am wheeled into that room, and let me know that I am never out of Your sight, even when I am asleep. I thank You for the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses who will care for me, and I ask You to guide their hands with skill and steadiness. Give them clear minds, sharp attention, and wisdom for every decision they make on my behalf. Let the procedure go well, and let my body respond and recover the way it should. Calm the fears of my family and friends who are waiting and praying, and ease the worry pressing on their hearts. Help me to trust both the care of these skilled people and the greater care of Your hand over all of it. If I am afraid, hold me; if I am in pain afterward, comfort me; if recovery is slow, give me patience. Remind me that whatever happens, I belong to You, and that nothing can separate me from Your love. I release my fear and place myself fully into Your keeping. Carry me through this, Lord, and bring me safely to the other side. Amen.

A Breath Prayer for the Moments Before

Lord, I am in Your hands; give me peace and carry me through. Amen.

But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord.Jeremiah 30:17

Frequently asked questions

What is a good prayer to say before surgery?

Pray simply: 'Lord, I place this surgery in Your hands—guide the doctors, keep me safe, and calm my fear. Amen.' Praying it the night before and again in pre-op helps many people enter surgery with peace instead of panic.

What should I pray for someone having surgery?

Pray for three things: skill and focus for the medical team, safety and a smooth recovery for the patient, and peace for everyone waiting. A short prayer like 'Father, guide every hand that cares for them and bring them safely through' covers the heart of it.
